Forced marriage and ‘honour’ based abuse are harsh realities for many, leaving victims trapped in silence, fearing shame, dishonour, or even danger if they speak out. For those affected, the isolation is often overwhelming, with nowhere to turn and no one they can trust. Too often, these individuals suffer in silence, enduring unimaginable pressures. The need for action is clear: we must support those who cannot yet find their voice.
In solidarity with the victims, WiRP member Zara Liedl Carroll, a Fundraising and Volunteer Coordinator at the Sky Project, will take part in a 12-hour sponsored silence on Sunday, December 1st. Her silent vigil, held in memory of those affected by forced marriage and ‘honour’ based abuse, is part of the Sky Project’s commitment to raising awareness and breaking the silence. This initiative supports the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which runs from November 25th to December 10th, ending on Human Rights Day.
The Sky Project, a registered charity (number 1186737), provides essential training, education, and support for victims, and Zara’s goal is to raise much-needed funds to expand these vital programs. “We will not forget those who have sadly lost their lives to ‘honour’ based abuse,” says Zara. Every donation counts, no matter the amount, in the fight to end forced marriage and empower those suffering in silence.
